#WeAreWatching

This week, the SC Senate’s Redistricting Subcommittee announced their first organizational meeting, scheduled for July 20 at 10:30 AM. This meeting will be in advance of the release of Census data (slated for August 16). The SC House will follow suit, and has announced an August 3 meeting. The meeting will be livestreamed on http://www.scstatehouse.gov. Follow along and share your thoughts with us and your SC representatives on social media using the hashtag #WeAreWatching.

Members of the SC Senate Redistricting Committee are:

Senator Luke Rankin (Chair), Horry County
Senator Chip Campsen, Charleston County
Senator Tom Young, Aiken County
Senator Robbie Sabb, Williamsburg County
Senator Margie Bright-Matthews, Colleton County
Senator Scott Talley, Spartanburg County
Senator Dick Harpootlian, Richland County

Meanwhile, the League of Women Voters of South Carolina continues to prepare for redistricting as well; this week members of our team have traveled to Utah for the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Redistricting Conference, continued educations presentations for SC voters, and discussed the pitfalls of gerrymandered districts with state journalists. Next week, we will be convening our Redistricting Advisory Committee for the first time.

We’ll keep you updated here – with so much at stake, now is the time to let your representatives know #WeAreWatching, and we want maps that are in the best interest of voters, not legislators themselves.
